Don Discher

I was a U.S Marine in WWII and fought in the South Pacific. Came back to the "states" and then went back to Hawaii where we were loading battle ships preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. I wound up as part of the occupation force in Sasebo , Japan . That city had been leveled by U.S. air force bombers prior to our arrival.

After being returned home I was discharged from the Marines at Oceanside , CA . My military service lasted for three plus years.

I took the Berkeley Police test and the Oakland Police test and opted for the Oakland job. I was sworn in at the City Hall, November 1949. After going through the police academy my first assignment was at the old Eastern Division for a very short time. Then I was assigned to the Service Division, in the City Hall, which included; Search officer, Front office officer, Jail officer and Property room officer.

From there I was assigned to Central Division. I was assigned as a car beat officer and then assigned as Ambulance Officer/driver for about three years. Eventually I was transferred to the old Northern Division as Ambulance/Wagon officer for awhile. Then back to Central Division working East Oakland beats.

I was promoted to Sergeant and spent the next six years in CID working Auto Boost Detail and then Homicide, Sex Crimes section. I spent the last few months on the job in the Communications Section before I had a heart attack and was given a disability retirement having served almost 24 years.

I met my wife at Highland Hospital E.R. when I was working as the Ambulance officer and she was the E.R. nurse. Later on she became an Alameda County deputy sheriff then she got a job as the first full time City of Oakland Jail nurse.

After retirement I had a Rare Book business for a number of years. My wife and I have done a lot of traveling via cruise ships 16+ different times. We also traveled to Europe several times.

Then there was the cannibal who loved to eat missionary's. The problem was that every time he ate one he threw up. The witchdoctor diagnosed his problem thusly;

It just goes to show you that you can't keep a good man down.

A nine-month investigation into complaints that Concord police racially targeted Latino drivers has concluded that some of the allegations were true, Concord police Chief Ron Ace reported today. Two police officers were placed on administrative leave during the investigation, Ace said. The officer believed to be responsible for the profiling no longer works for the department, Ace said, and his supervisor has been "appropriately disciplined.''

In my many years as a street cop, 99% of those that I pulled over were white drivers. Wonder if I would have been in trouble if that was known?

I just hate being put on administrative leave.

[Don Discher may angrily address me privately for posting our latest

Communication, but so what's new. To typify how truly different we all are

Don is no doubt the epitome of individualism with the balls to express it.

I admire and respect Don's differences and his willingness to express them so fervently (my admiration or his willingness?) that both my hat and my Disagreement are often tipped to this great man. In some ways I regard Don as the Andy Rooney of our Department, but that would be to dilute his status.]

R: I agree with the above note. The term DIFFERENT does define me just as it defines you. The same goes for INDIVIDUALISM which is in contrast toHolism. Actually "BALLS" has nothing to do with any of the above items. Personally I rather shudder at being admired and respected. I would much rather be worshipped. Andy Rooney is a part time sage which comes with age and experience, so I think that would apply to many of us.

If all of the facts were known one would find that I am nothing more than a seeker of wisdom and truth, a person on the cutting edge and a visionary. Besides that I have flashing blue eyes - - some have told me that my eyes look like Lake Louise under a summer sky.

I am also a student of being brief to the point of brevity.

Here is a brief quote from the great Robert Ingersoll: An honest God is the noblest Work of Man.

Each nation has created a god, and the god has always resembled his creators.

He hated and loved what they hated and loved, and he was invariably found on the side of those in power. Each god was intensely patriotic, and detested all nations but his own. All these gods demanded praise, flattery, and worship. Most of them were pleased with sacrifice, and the smell of innocent blood has ever been considered a divine perfume. All these gods have insisted upon having a vast number of priests, and the priests have always insisted upon being supported by the people, and the principal business of these priests has been to boast about their god, and to insist that he could easily vanquish all the other gods put together.

Keep up the good work you are doing a truly fine job and one that is appreciated by all concerned.

Deuel Vocational Institution, named for the late Senator C.H.  Deuel, is located just a few miles from the town of Tracy .  It is a small   complex prison community.  It has its own dairy, manufacturing industry,   sewerage treatment plant, education programs and farming.

The Warden of this facility said, its his job to protect the   public , the inmates incarcerated there and the personnel who work there.   Deuel was completed and became operational in 1953.  Each year over 22,000   inmates are received for processing and transfer.

3,300 prisoners are housed in the reception facility, while the   remaining 500-600 are permanent, Main Line inmates.  None of them   want to be there.  Upon arrival at Deuel the criminals   are divided according to what kind of crime they were convicted of  doing. A man convicted of a crime like vehicular manslaughter, for instance, may   be sent to a minimum security fire camp where he might assist in  fighting wild-fires, while a career criminal with a record is likely to be  assigned to a high security facility.

All areas are heated; none have air conditioning.  A cell   is approximately six or eight feet wide and ten feet long.  The toilet is   directly adjacent to the cell door, two feet from the lower  bunk.   Modesty is out of the question.

Those who work there are not "prison guards" but are called   correctional officers.  There are about 750 officers at Deuel and about a   third of them are women.  They manage roughly 3800 inmates and work three   shifts per day.  They are well paid an have good fringe benefits, but they   earn every nickel.  This
is not an easy job.
