Laid Up [Jim Edwards] On Monday the 26th of June, Jim Edwards, former OPD and EPRPD officer, underwent a triple bypass surgery. This followed an evening of discomfort and eventually pain radiating down one of his arms. He was initially going to have a quadruple bypass, but the doctor decided that a triple would be sufficient. He is at Alta Bates in recovery and will undergo a minor procedure today to isolate a blood clot in one of his legs. I spoke with his wife this morning who said Jim is doing very well given his circumstances and that if everything continues to go well, he should be out of the hospital in 4 - 6 days. At his time, he is unable to receive telephone calls or visitors. Eddie Marquez, who has been through this himself, has been assisting Jim's wife Jeannie. I just got word that retired officer Jim Edwards is a Alta Bates for quadruple bypass today. He was admitted with chest pains yesterday. Nothing further. Jim Mitchell] You asked about Jim's cancer...He developed Esophageal Cancer back in 1995 and underwent surgery at that time. He was free and clear of it for nearly eight years, but in 2003 it metastasized to his adrenal glands and in 2004 to his abdomenal lymph nodes. He's had a total of three surgeries, and many months of chemo therapy. He's a very tough customer, and continues to fight the good fight. (I've often wondered how many cops develop esophageal cancer. I'm sure Jim's was caused from so many years of indigestion and popping tums all the time. And also, the involvement of adrenal glands. Over your careers, you've all had your share of adrenaline rushes, and for so many years suppressed the expression of fear, and kept your cool. It seems it would someday have an impact.)
