[OPD940] Oz: Thank you again for all of the hard work you and Sassa put into bringing an old man's brain fart to fruition. Joe Sweeney, thank you for pitching in and cleaning up after the elephant. Joe Thomas, thank you for planting the seed. At the risk of sounding melancholy, the OPD940 - 2005 was one of those "Kodak moments" that I will carry with me always. It is because of you guys that I get to have such a cherished memory. Harlan*** Back to top Ron, *** From: "Randy Pope" <randypope@comcast.net> Date: Tue, 21 Jun 2005 11:32:46 -0700 We already have the OPOA Picnic (which is coming up) EVERY YEAR, and the Awards Dinner (if you crave a more formal venue) EVERY YEAR. Then there's Camaraderie every month....... I agree the reunion should not be every year. I think every 5 is good- and we're already on a 5, 10, 15 track with the first being in 2005! It should be continued as what it was- something rare and special, that people will take the extra effort to attend. Randy *** Back to top Hi Ron! It really broke my heart that I couldn't be at the 940, which was due to my wife having some post operative complications, but I had already planned on next year, Gods Will, now I hear guys recommending every 5 years, my suggestion would be to have one next year for all the guy's who couldn't make this one then maybe stretch it out to 2 years or whatever everyone votes on, thats an idea, take a vote. Truly the Democratic way. Sounds like you did a great job and you look just like you did when u left us many years ago. Good Luck, Gods speed, Jess Allen *** Dear OPENLINE members, I've read about the build up for the O.P.D. 940 in Reno and then all the email's after all had returned home. I've looked at ALL of the photos and it was great to put faces to the names of all of the email's that I have read over the years. What a fantastic event and so much work for the people who spear headed this magnificent event. Kudos to Ron and all the others who did all the behind the scenes work. I really enjoyed reading all of the comments and I do envy all of you. Apparently everyone I knew has gone to the 'great police department in the sky'. I was told by Barry Wysling that it was a great reunion and I should have kicked myself for not showing up. He said the food was wonderful and he wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Nugget to anyone. Also, what a wonderful job was done in such a short order to get this first reunion and make a success of it. Many thanks to you for allowing me the opportunity of being a part of the group and yes, I am sorry I didn't go. Jo Anne *** Back to top From: ch6365p@comcast.net Subject: A Hugh Thank You Date: Wed, 15 Jun 2005 17:09:39 +0000 Joe, Harlan, Ron & Joe, Although I was unable to get to the Reunion until dinner was just finishing up on Saturday, I was able to hear most of the speeches and to mingle and rekindle with all the wonderful people I befriended and worked along side of for so many years. There were so many there that it was impossible to carry on a lengthy conversation with any particular one because someone else would come up resulting in a new re-acquaintance and the retelling of more stories and "what are you up to now's". Unfortunately, there were also so many others whom I saw or heard were there and that I was unable to catch up to. You four are to be congratulated on a magnificent job well done, especially given the time schedule you had to work with. I was one of the co-coordinators for the annual OPD Yosemite Motorcycle Run for many years and have also assisted with other miscellaneous events (nothing of which comes close to the magnitude of this event) and therefore have some appreciation for the time and effort something like this demands. I also want to thank your wives who either assisted and/or supported you guys during the planning and implementation of this event. A special thanks goes to Michele Gribi and Tim Sanchez, and those who helped them, for their magnificent contribution of time and effort in making available all those visual displays. It was awesome. Ron, sorry about the Tom Campbell thing. I don't have Tim or Michelle's E-mail addresses, so I would appreciate it if you would pass this on to them. Lastly, should you guys have the desire to do this again somewhere in the future, I would be honored to provide any assistance I can. I would have liked to help this year, but the timing of the reunion was in great conflict with my schedule Cliff Heanes *** Back to top From: "Alan L. My last four years at OPD were not fun. While I probably accomplished a few good things, it broke my heart to see OPD's decline and lack of direction. During that time I believe that I lost a lot of what I had felt for the previous 24 years: that being a part of the OPD family was something special. The OPD940 reminded me of how much I love the Department and the men and women who have (and who still do) make it a very special place. The feeling of love and respect in the banquet room Saturday night was a very special moment in my life. I believe that you both (along with those great people who helped you make this happen) have done more to reunite OPD past and present than has happened in decades. The only time in recent years that I have felt anything like this family bonding is at funerals. It's about time we had FUN being together! You have earned a special place in OPD history. As it is with many of the stories told at the 940, words can't do the event justice... "you had to be there..." On the other hand, by not being there you gave us someone to talk ABOUT, without fear of being contradicted. Note to Maddux: I was looking forward to the reunion of "Batman and Robin" and maybe a short demonstration of that "rolling 415f" they provided. :-) Most frequent questions asked (but not always in this order): 1. Where are you living now; 2. what are you doing with yourself? 3. Do you know whatever happened to.. (fill in a name here)..? Not enough can be said about the great job done by the prime movers in this thing: Harlan Goodson, Ron Oz, and Joe Thomas. In typical fashion when you approached any of them about this they pointed to one or both of the other two saying something like, "they/he really did most of it..." And then there is Sassa Oz-- who I suspect is responsible for a lot of the heavy lifting, especially the web site maintenance, and I believe, design. [There are people who sell their ability -- claimed ability -- at web sight design who could learn a lot from her..] And best of all--- the OPD940 stimulated Jim Coleman to write a few complete sentences complete with punctuation and capital letters that make sense. BJ also hit a homerun with that piece. I too feel honored, humbled, to have had the pleasure of sharing a locker room, sitting in the same lineup room, with some of the true giants of the business. There's a lot more to be said, but it can't all be done today. Mike Martin Sgt, Ret. I didn't know the participants other than that both were retired and both were wearing their OPD 940 ID's. What I saw was one approach the other and shake his hand and say, "I want to apologize for ...". Whatever it was, I was under the impression that this was a disagreement of some tenure. How liberating this must have been for both men. What a credit to the organizers of the 940 who facilitated that moment. Thanks to all who made it happen. And before someone steals my line -- on Friday night as many of us met again for the first time in 20 years, I said to anyone who was listening: "If we all died and went to heaven, it would probably be something like this.".
