[Bill Andrews ** Riverbank, California ]

OPD 1972 - 1997. Retired after last 2+ years (not 2 days!) in Patrol as a Sgt. Currently working in Modesto as Criminal Investigator for the Stanislaus County DA 's office. Recent black smoke from chimney in Vatican City indicates I was at least one vote shy of election as Pope. At least this way I can remain married to my lovely bride of 15 years, Lana, and share our humble estate in Riverbank. Damn! As much as I was looking forward to wearing cool gold and silk threads around Rome , I suspect that they may still not have been ready for my chosen title of "Pope Pompous I"

Can't wait for the mass 940! GIT'R Done!

[Bob Attwood ** Aurora , Colorado ]

I'm living with my wife of 55 years on the high prairie of Colorado with a view of the Rocky Mountains to the West and a view of Denver below, as we are at about 6,000 feet. There is a little yard-work if you don't plant anything. Built a barn for the trailer, tractor, a couple of old Corvairs, etc.

We travel some and do a little off-roading. Also attend old folks exercise classes three times a week and attend various social and informational events every month. Those plus the TV and computer keep our minds as sharp as can be expected.

We have four Granddaughters between the ages of 17 and 20 that we mentor and subsidize and they entertain us in return. Both our daughter and son live within 20 minutes of us with their families. Both families have horses, dogs and cats and sometimes take in other assorted creatures.

I had a knee replacement a year ago and am looking forward (not) to a shoulder replacement. We've slowed down some but still enjoy life and don't look a day older.

Now in active retirement mode after 25+ years in OPD and 6+ years at Davis P.D. Both kids are "out and about" so Kathy and I are empty nesters if you don't count the dog. We both enjoy travel, with at least one long domestic trip and one foreign trip per year. With more discretionary time, I'm able to bike ride about 200 miles weekly with other cyclist retirees. Looking back I now have the answers to all the world's problems but nobody wants to listen. My quarter century with OPD is my most cherished memory and if I had to live my life over again I would not change a thing.

[David R. Evans ** Valley Springs , California ]

When I returned from Vietnam in 1968 as a Marine Staff Sergeant, I went to visit my Uncle Bob at the OPD. Capt. Ford gave me a run down on the good and the bad of being a cop in Oakland .

I started on 10 Feb. 1969. They cut our graduation from the 53 rd Academy short when they sent us and some grizzled old Motor men to Berkeley to quell the rioters at Peoples Park .

I transferred to YSD and spent about four years with partners like Harlan Goodson and Don Lopes. I went back to Patrol for a couple of years, then transferred to Vice/Narcotics. I worked for Sgt. Larry Rodrique and my partner was "Gremmie." I transferred out shortly after I shot a suspect in the penis.

I got divorced and I married the love of my life Janet in 1980. In 1981 a long series of tests revealed I had Multiple Sclerosis. I was fortunate to work for some great bosses like Doug Krathwohl and Steve Todar, who put me on the "desk" for about three years. Then Captain Jim Cooper brought me over to Traffic, as a Hit and Run investigator next to Charlie Teich and John Cave .

I assumed the Presidency of Oakland Police Officers Sports Assoc. with the partnership of Doug Crain and Jesse Allen raised funds through motorcycle raffles and crab feed to fund the Thunder Hogs and all the athletic teams at OPD.

In 1987 I began a project to bring the California Police Olympics to Oakland . We were successful in our bid and held the 25 th anniversary games in August of 1991. My board of directors included Leroy Sergeant and Burnie Mathews.

When the games were over, Gerry Gruen asked me to take over the PAL program as the Executive Director. I was paralyzed for about two months, in 1994, after severe MS attack. I returned to work on crutches and worked there until the political climate and Chief Hart's replacement forced me into retirement.

I worked as a Court Attendant in Superior Court in Hayward for four years. I then left to begin a new career as a Private Investigator. I'm currently working and living in Valley Springs, Ca.

[Wayne Ford ** Lincoln , California ]

After leaving OPD as a sergeant in 1980, I ream a series of real estate, property management, and industrial development enterprises in Benicia and Vallejo . From there I was a corporate training manager, an IRS revenue officer, a nursing home administrator, an executive placement consultant, president of a police training company (Welltech) and various other ventures and positions. I went back into the reserves, retiring from the Air Force in 1997. I've written 17 books, including " Managing Police Stress " and the recent " Soldier of the City ", which is mostly about OPD experiences. I've been overwhelmed by the number of OPD who have procured and read the book. I "Totally Retired" in 2000, meaning I'm busier than I have ever been. I travel some and attend groups and clubs including retired law enforcement, veterans, genealogy, writing, heritage, neighborhood watch, and local magazine staff.

My home now is in Sun City Lincoln, where I misbehave as much as my wife Kathy allows. There are about 10,000 residents here in Sun City including 7 of us who are former OPD (or always OPD).

[Bob Frazer ** Alameda , California ]

Entered OPD 1993 Reserve Academy . Sworn June 12, 1993. Field Training on "old" Beat 4 under the "excellent tutelage" of Tim Sanchez (how did I make it through that? Oh yeah, Larry Eade and Bob Crawford watched Tim). Then, Friday Night Reserve Detail and "Sideshow Specialist" until an injury left me paralyzed from waist down in April 2000. Recipient of Reserve Officer of the Year award three times in my all-too-short OPD "second career."

Married Pam, in September 1999. Currently residing in Alameda , CA . Pam is a Billing Accountant for the Law Firm of Hanson Bridgett et al in San Francisco . Son from previous marriage (Chad Robert) is making me a grandpa in June 2005. Grandson will be Lukas Matthew (or Micah), or whatever else they decide. They reside in Montgomery , AL (God will help us all).

Paid career was as an Area Manager, then Regional Director of Finance/Controller for American Protective Services (then Pinkerton, Now named Securitas , US ). Currently looking for position, since I have been cleared to work again, after three years of recovery, bed and rehab from complications of my injury.

Other than time with my wife and family, the best times of my life have been working with the men and women of OPD. I truly miss being there with you. God bless and keep you safe.

Larry Adams and I retired from OPD in 1978, Larry took a position with PG&E Corporate security and I went to the Clorox Co. as their Security Coordinator. I remained with Clorox for two years then moved on to Farmer's Insurance. At Farmer's there were three of us that supervised our office and the Private Investigators. We were hired to investigate insurance fraud cases.

After the years without any increase in salary from Framer's, just a lot of promises, I quit and obtained a PI Lic. and started my own business. One day I received a telephone call from Adam alerting me that PG&E's Corporate Security Director would be calling me.

6 1/2 years later I retired from PG&E.

My wife and I purchased our home in Nevada in 1988 and moved here in 1990. We both love this area, easy access to Reno , Carson City , Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas .

Since moving to Gardnerville, I have had cataracts removed from both eyes. In early 2001 I started experiencing wrist pains, which led to a triple by-pass operation on March 31, 2001. Now I am feeling good, however I take it easy. At 79 years of age, I am in good shape for the shape I am in. That's it!

[Terry Green ** Oakland , Oregon ]

I joined OPD on 19 Oct 59 and retired 19 Oct 1985. Can't quote my retirement letter verbatim after all these years but what I wanted to express was that all that I was professionally and all I would ever be in law enforcement I could attribute to the guys I worked with on OPD. I literally owe my life to members of that "thin blue line." Adding my four years on Atherton PD to my OPD time works out like this - 15 years in uniform, 14 years plain clothes. I have the deepest respect for all who carried the OPD badge.who showed up when we were in trouble and who shared that deep common respect for each other.

In 1985 the FBI recruited me to move back to Washington D.C. area to help start up a serial killer tracking and investigation system called VICAP. I left law enforcement and joined the FBI. I worked for the FBI for eleven years, traveled the country and several foreign countries working with the local guys on homicide investigations. The fact that I was retired OPD opened all kinds of doors for me; I was instantly accepted by people who are not keen in accepting the FBI but made me the exception. I felt like the Indian scout must have felt working with Custer. What I found out through this process was that police folks worldwide are pretty much the same and that there truly is a world wide brotherhood of police.

When my wife Donna retired from the Alameda County Sheriffs Department and I retired from the FBI we toured the U.S. for two years in our RV. We settled down in of all places Oakland , Oregon . Donna took a job as Chief of Police of OPD , Oregon . She has now retired from that job so we are both retired OPD.

If you ever find yourself in our neighborhood please stop by for a glass of ice tea or a scotch of your choice.

[Harry Harris ** Oakland , California ]

I am currently a reporter at Oakland Tribune covering OPD, which I have been doing pretty much since 1971. Despite what some naysayers might say, I still consider OPD to be among the best police departments in the country.
I have been working at the Tribune since Sept. 1965 and hope to work here for 50 years. In my career I have written thousands of stories about OPD - including crimes, retirements, deaths, promotions, and misconduct - and have made many friends in the department over the years I know not everyone has liked all my stories, but I always try to be fair and accurate.
I now do stories about the children of officers who were on the department when I first started. It will probably be time to retire when I start doing stories about their grandchildren.

[Frank Harrsion ** Clayton , California ]

Have quit teaching pistol after 30 years. Traveling a lot. Newly wed (Oct. 04). Go to New England a few times a year (Marguerite has grand kids there). Going to take regular trip to Maui (May 7 > June 4). Going to Italy in Oct.

[George Hart ** Danville , California ]

Still somewhat active in the field, serving as the Executive Coordinator for the Alameda County Chiefs of Police and Sheriff's Association and serving on the Deadly Force Review Board for the California Department of Corrections. (Re the latter, read "K-3 Board" for those who remember their GOs.) "Consulting" is a word I dislike immensely because it conjures up images of the scummiest of the scum - those who borrow your watch to tell you what time it is, and all the rest - but I fear that I have done a little of that as well. Hopefully I have been able to plug a little OPD into a few agencies here and there. But, the most important thing Bea and I are doing? Babysitting two sweetheart grand daughters on a frequent basis. Nothing could be better.

[Chris Haxby ** Sparks , Nevada ]

For those who bet against us, Charlotte and I are still together after almost 30 years. We have four children and seven grandchildren. After we retired from OPD, we moved to Red Bluff. I taught school for a while and Charlotte went to work for Shasta County DA 's office. I then went to work for Tehama County Probation and worked with the drug task force. Later I went to work for California State Parole. Charlotte soon went to work for them also. We moved to Sparks two years ago. I retired 12-1-03. Charlotte will retire soon. We both are members of Hot August Nights and Reno Corvettes plus the grandchildren keep us busy.

[Norm Healy ** Santa Maria , California ]

Worked with OPD from 74-85, left as a Sgt. In CID to go to the DA's Office as an Inspector. Retired from there in 1989 after buying some previous Alameda County law enforcement service time back. I'm retiring again from Cal Poly P.D. later this year (definitely showed me how great it was working for OPD.)

Very happily married to an absolutely wonderful woman, living in Santa Maria , Ca., and we own a bookkeeping, tax, payroll and consulting business based there.

We have purchased rental property and a view lot on which to build at the edge of the National Forest in Prescott , AZ , and the majority of our current clients will continue to work with us. We intend to add new clients once in AZ. Our goal is to work very hard during the tax season, and then relax most of the rest of the year.

Fought really nasty cancer from 1999 - 2001, beat it so far after having mics. body parts removed. Made me realize what is really important in life.family and friends.

We have 6 children, all grown up except for a 14 year old, and 5 grandkids with # 6 on the way. Our hobbies are dancing, motorcycle riding and going to the gym. Life is really good.

[Bob Holland ** Walnut Creek , California ]

It has been thrilling to observe how this upcoming OPD Reunion gala has gathered so much momentum over these past few months. A simple concept, really, yet unrealized for so many years! With Teddy Martin retirement party certain to run a close second, I would opine that this could very well become the most significant social event in OPD history!

My wife Jackie and I are undeniably grateful for the opportunity to attend this most memorable event, and of course we're indebted to the inimitable and cerebral Ron Oznowicz for his enormous contribution to this project. Reverent kudos to you and your illustrious committee, Ron.

My own personal career with OPD was shortened due to a disability retirement, and Jackie and I have subsequently taken up residence in Walnut Creek . We share our modest home with our petite, sweet, but "bratty" 8-pound Yorkshire terrier. Diminutive in stature, but enormous in status, she quite simple enjoys undisputed control over the Holland family.

Over the past few years our somewhat sedate lifestyle has been punctuated with junkets to Maui and occasional shop cruises, viz: the Caribbean, Panama Canal and most notable, an absolutely phenomenal voyage to Russia and the Scandinavian capitals.

My life after OPD has been pretty much defined by Senior Slow-pitch Softball and Christmas trees! Re softball activities, surviving an unfortunate series of motorcycle crashes over the years, has been a significant factor in the reclassification of my status from player to that team manager.

Christmas trees and the peddling of some remain in my blood, and, God willing, I will continue this tradition to my dying day. Long ago, when I had the gall to declare that "Bob's Trees" was an "institution" in Moraga , my friends were quick to admonish, "No Bob, you should be in an institution." (I stood corrected.)

I send the very best wishes and good health to all. until the next OPD reunion.

[Charles (Chuck) Holland ** Manteca, California]

After disability retirement and about two and a half years therapy, I went to work part time in a Bowling Center. I still enjoy a lot of pain and residual problems resulting form my injury but I live to enjoy life. My wife and kids have always been very supportive of any endeavor that I attempted. I now have a granddaughter and we are really enjoying her. I joined the Professional Bowlers Association in 1995 and bowled against the best there is in the sport. I have won one Senior Regional PBA title and am still bowling competitively on  a part time basis. My wife and I moved to Manteca , Calif. and I am thinking about a real retirement in the next two years. We then intend to travel the US and I will bowl on the PBA Senior circuit for a couple of years.

I really missed the guys and work that I did for so many years and I have always been proud to tell anyone that I was a member of the best Police organization there is.

[Jim Horne ** Truckee , California ]

I retired from OPD in 1990. I joined SFO Airport Police, and in July of 1997 we were merged with SFPD. Everything has been downhill from there on. I have never been associated with such a corrupt nepotistic organization in my life. We (the old SF Airport officers) are considered the bastard children of SFPD and are treated as such. I'm trying to retire from here but there are even problems with the retirement system and the SFO Airport Officers. This is my 38 th year with Law Enforcement.

Our Tax Business is growing and I will be spending more time with that upon my retirement. Besides preparing annual tax returns, I am also licensed to represent clients and their tax matters at IRS or Franchise Tax Board.

We'll be looking forward to seeing everyone. You guys have done such a great job in such a short period of time!

[Dave Hunter ** Camas, Washington ]

Firstly, let me apologize for the 432 page length of this short biography. I started off as a child, and didn't know where to stop!

Since I was told that length was in fact an issue, I have included only page 432!

I left OPD in February, 1998, and returned to college in hopes of meeting the love of my life (one of the professors of course). Since my course of study was computers, the professors I met spoke Cobol, Perl, and Fortran. I found little romance in their IF, AND statements, and after receiving several Bits and Bytes, decided romance must await me somewhere else.

To the internet I traveled, and after years of searching, I met Diane! Her angelic personality and sincerity focused a heat upon my circuitry which caused an immediate wallowing in the lush green grass of our relationship, knowing this is the best thing that ever happened to me.

We moved to Camas, Washington , since Diane didn't feel comfortable with my being around her friends. She said something about putting me out to pasture. We bought seven acres and she moves me from pasture to pasture, just to let me know that the grass is never greener on the other side of the fence.

I'm sure as a result of my damaged circuitry we decided to create a business. Diane and I opened a company called H2 Renovations! The business does remodeling and preparing homes for sale, with some emphasis on taking care of the elderly and disabled alterations to homes.

This business is a fledgling business in which I've drawn my son into as well. I may have been trying to get away from hard drives and IF statements, but I've ended up with screwdrivers and fence abatements. I just know the meaning of life is here somewhere.

[Dave Jennings ** Kings Beach , California ]

My wife, Monica, and I have a condo at North Lake Tahoe ( Incline Village ), and a sailboat presently in San Diego . We brought the boat to San Diego last year after enjoying three years sailing Mexico . On an earlier boat it took 3 ½ years sailing from San Francisco down through the Canal, and up to Ft. Lauderdale .

Ideally we spend winters on the boat and summers at Tahoe, between seasons, and sometimes during, we are off on land travels far and wide. We have reservations for France in September.

During passing moments in the real world, Monica sells real estate at Tahoe, and I write - travel, sail, and children's stories; carve wood and stone; and together we make jewelry, and plan future adventures. We think of ourselves as citizens of the world.

[Jim Kennemore "JAK" ** Roseville, California ]

Having been retired almost twelve years now I am often asked by new acquaintances what I did in the real world. I almost always reply without thinking, "I was an OPD Motor Man"...I then have to explain that I also did other things during my 27 years, but motors (for me) was where it was at. Anything, good or bad, that happened in or around Oakland , motors were there. Since I was ten years old (growing up in East Oakland ) I wanted to be either a Marine fighter pilot, or an OPD Motor Man. In the mid 60's I was working hard to become one or the other...when OPD accepted me my wife made me sell my airplane and buy our first house.

I relocated to a beautiful new house and neighborhood in Roseville about a year ago...I think we're the oldest folks on our short street. A few doors away is a Roseville officer who recently was transferred to motors (BMW-bah!). When I met him I asked if he went to motor school at the CHP Academy . He replied, "Nope I was trained by Cadematori (at the ALCOSO Training Center )". Small world.

Sorry. I couldn't resist a few personal comments, I guess because I miss it so. Thank you all once again for making me proud to be part of the OPD family. Hope to see you all in Reno .

After three surgeries in 1995 I was forced to retire and was disability retired on Aug. 1, 1996. In Jan. 2000 I purchased a home on the Big Island of Hawaii. We moved over in Nov. 2000 and remained there until July 2004. After scouting out a number of locations in Nevada , Utah and Arizona we moved to the Tucson area where we purchased a new home on a 3+ acres alongside the Saguaro National Park West.

I was divorced in 1985 from wife Kathy. In 1991, I married Lena , who is a retired Sheriff's Lieutenant from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

We do miss Hawaii , but Tucson puts us much closer to our multitude of children in California (7 kids and 11 grandkids) and St. Louis (1 son, 2 grandkids and 1 great grand daughter).

And, our home in Arizona would probably cost us 1.5 million in Hawaii .

I dabble with computers, repair, upgrade and build and enjoy working around the home plus a bit of travel here and there.

[Paul Musch ** Sparks , Nevada ]

I have called Sparks , Nevada my home for almost six years now. Since my wife and I enjoy the Reno buffets so much, we spend a lot of time at our neighborhood gym.

I spend a good portion of time collecting and selling old west collectibles, which includes anything from cowboy to law enforcement, saloon, gambling, and mining items. I buy and sell at four shows/year out of state and three locally at the Hilton's Big Reno show.

We have so much cowboy memorabilia at home I feel like I'm reliving my childhood when I was watching Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers and Gene Auntry on TV.

I haven't done as much hunting and fishing as I would like since retiring, but have done a lot of traveling in our motorhome.

I've been so busy since retiring from OPD, I frequently wonder how I had time to work.

[Elaine Kurlinski-Myshak ** Alameda , California ]

Where?: Alameda , CA (38 years except for 18 mo. hiatus 1992 in Oregon after I remarried)

Doing what and why?: Enjoying my retirement years. Always involved with home maintenance having been a landlady for many years. Love nothing better than climbing on a ladder and painting room(s) - biggest time occupier is my gazillion plants, both in my outside backyard jungle as well as inside my home.

Since Richard and I blended families at our senior ages - now we've got 20 (count'em 20) grandchildren and I've even got 2 great grandsons now thanks to Joe's oldest, Laura (27). So this multitude means road or plane trips to Portland , Oregon - D.C. - Michigan , N. Carolina, and Missouri to see grandbabies - trips, flowers, home maintenance - spare time --- computer keeping in touch with family, which includes my OPD "kids" - Read at least a book a week, my "sleeping pill". - which can also mean sleeping - in - but at nearly 75 - hey, think I've earned it!

It was very difficult for me to learn OPOA when I remarried and left after all those years. My head and heart are filled with many previous memories and "stories". I was present when the first George Bush was President and dedicated the Police memorial in D.C. - and couple times afterwords. - Last time was double difficult to see Soto & Grijalva's names and still hear echoes of Bill calling me at OPOA office after I'd called Radio 'cause he had some Welfare committee meeting . and he'd say, "Whatcha need Mom?"

Imagine I have enough "stories" to fill a book (most off the cuff) but my absolutely favorite one is the young rookie (was apparent - don't remember name) - came into OPOA office late in the afternoon at about closing time. His request? "Elaine, do you have a needle and thread?" Seems his Sgt. Did some inspection at lineup and he had been chewed out about loose button. Yes - Elaine fixed his loose button!

End of "stories". Looking forward to 940 in Reno , and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

[Harold Newberry ** Orangevale , California ]

I have lived in Orangevale, between Sacramento and Auburn , for approx. ten years. I play or attempt to play golf as often as I can. I am still married to Barbara, 46 years and counting.

After being retired from OPD in 1981, we moved to Northern Idaho, a few miles from my former partner from the walking detail, Charlie Blanchard. After a few years of cold winters, but lot's of good times, we ended up back in California. I went to work for American National Can in Newark, Ca in 1983 and retired as Operations Manager in 1994. Nowadays I watch after my three grandkids on two acres in Orangevale. Outside of two heart attacks, three "Procedures" and a blood clot in my right leg, I feel pretty damn good. I really look forward to talking about some of the good times we all shared and seeing some of the "Old guys".

I'm not doing much - mainly wrinkling and turning gray. We travel quite a lot now. Last Nov. we took a 30 day cruise through the South Pacific, stopping at all the Islands ( Hawaii , Samoa , Fiji , Tahiti, etc.) and ending up in Australia where we rented a car and did the tourist thing for a month. The year before we spent some time in Paris and Lake Como before traveling by train to Venice where we began a 2 week Mediterranean cruise that terminated in Barcelona . We go to Mexico a couple times a year and once I even telephoned Jim Coleman in Mazatlan and got instructions on finding his house, but nobody would answer the door when I showed up!

Two years ago we went to Hawaii with Skip and Verna Kelsey and we are going there with them again in Oct. my wife and I plan to buy matching Aloha shirts and I will take my black OPD shoes and Knee length stockings in keeping with the "old fart" image. We have been to a lot of other places too, but being 70 years old. I can't remember where or when.

We just figure that if we keep on the move the Grim Reaper will not know when to find us.

I was hired by OPD in April 1972, worked patrol and motors, and after a hacked surgery, in an attempt to repair minor cartilage damage, I regrettable went out on a knee injury in July 1979. Even though I was with Oakland for only seven years it took me about ten years to adjust to the void of not being an active member of the major league team we know as OPD. I married my beautiful bride, Joan, a school teacher, two days after my one-year probationary period was up and have been enjoying life with her for 32 years. Our two daughters, Amy and Anne, are nurse practitioners, wives and mothers to our three granddaughters. While at OPD I worked in real estate development on the side and I continued with the same in the Sacramento area after my retirement. Over the years, I have met many different types of people, studied many jobs and professions, and find all else pales to what we had. I feel very fortunate to have been part of our joint experience at OPD. Email: skyking@surewest.net

I have been married to the same great woman, Paulette, since 1964. We have one son, and one granddaughter. My last assignment at OPD was Vice Sergeant. I left OPD in late 1979 to attend law school in Florida . After graduation I was a prosecutor for awhile, making less than when I started with OPD. This compelled me to civil practice. I was a partner in a large insurance defense firm for years before opening a solo practice in 1991. I'm in the process of retiring, hopefully the summer of 2005. Relax, I have not handled any criminal defense cases, and don't intend to start now. I remained in the Army reserves where I had the pleasure of attending the 1982 riots in Miami , and that bit of nastiness called Desert Storm. After returning from six months in the sand pile I retired as a First Sergeant. This reunion idea goes back to 1998 when I met up with Glen Tomek and Terry Foley in Milwaukee at the Harley 95th anniversary party. We discussed old friends over a few beers, and how great it would be to get them all together one last time. Took some time, but here we are.

After three years there I was picked for the first helicopter class and spent the next 11 years at the airport. I was then transferred to the Vice division where I spent the remainder of my years. In 1985 I retired to take a Chief of Police position in Ocean Shores , WA where I served for 14 years and then retired only to be invited by the City Council to be City Manager. After two years of that I finally retired for good. I also finished a 24-year Army reserve career about the same time having flown ch47 Chinooks during that career. I remember shooting with (against) Conrad Blevins "way back when" when I was an Alameda County Sheriff's Department Reserve) I worked there at OPD all that time, and there were many who didn't know my first name, as "Woz", or "The Woz" seemed to stick.  I guess you know how that works.
